A SAD SUICIDE. An enquiry into the cause of the death of Johann Godfried Hoffmann, who was found hanging in a shed at his residence at Frew ville on the nrevious dav. was held bv the City Coroner at the Fountain Inn on Satur day. The evidence disclosed that deceased, who was 64 years of age, had up to within six months of his death followed his occupation, that of architectural gardener. For a con siderable time he had been very low-spirited and dreaded that he would have to go to the Lunatic Asylum. His wife left home about 9 o'clock on Friday morning, leaving her hus band in his usual health and alone, a3 he ex pressed his wish not to have a friend with him. About quarter-past 9 he went to a neighbour's and stayed for a few minutes. In conversa tion he expressed a wish, when speaking of the little half-caste boy who had been killed on the previous day, that he had been in the child's place. He complained that his head was bad at the same time. When his wife returned from Adelaide about 12 o'clock she found him hanging in the shed. Dr. Addison was called in and found life to be extinct. The Jury returned a verdict that deceased had bung himself while in a state of insanity. South Australian Register Monday 15 June 1885 |
